IMG_4892 I overpurchased, I think! At left, see the boxes of perfume straight out of the box with foam peanut residue still clinging to them. “But there was a sale”, I say in my defense---“20 percent off at Parfum1.com—with a free gift!” I know it’s no excuse for buying 9 bottles, but, oh well, I did it. And it DID only cost 110 bucks—not so heinous, right? right? right?, she asks herself in the echo chamber of her own resounding guilt….

Ah well, what’s done is done, I guess, and now I get to enjoy the spoils. It is not as cool as Carol at WAFT’s serendipitous find, but still a pleasant group of frags for enjoyment and leisurely review. I am looking forward to comparing my new balmain vent vert in the early 90s formulation against my vintage parfum….I’ll let you know how that goes IMG_4889in a few days.

 

I have to show you the size of the box this all came in. I mean, you know you have a problem when your fragrance purchases come in a box of this size, that weighs (gulp…) seven pounds!

“…and you may find yourself…. living in a shotgun shack”, ( because you couldn’t stop buying perfume)

    You have a bottle of new Vent Vert? I can't wait to hear what it smells like, I have some vintage and that is one of the best things I ever smelled therefore I never use it but keep it safe. :)

    I know, BF, but I can't help it. You see, I was raised Lutheran, and that is as bad as Catholic guilt, just different.

    Ines, I will send you a sample. It is not the newest formulation (the one that led Luca Turin to declare, in his characteristically dramatic manner: 'vent vert is dead,') but rather, the one from the second formulation in the early nineties, I think (there's a thorough discussion of this issue here on Basenotes, if you're interested:

    I have the vintage parfum too, and it has to be one of my very favorites, but like you, I never touch it except in the most unique circumstances!

    I have Buyer's Guilt all the time...it hasn't actually stopped me buying perfume yet, however. I do make sure that my charitable giving outweighs my scent purchases by three times, which helps with the guilt, but still. I don't NEED it. I could probably make it the rest of my life on what I already own. I just don't want to.

    I thought I would LOVE Vent Vert - I found a small bottle of the parfum, still boxed, from the 90's reformulation on ebay, and enjoyed it but never fell in love. Surprised me, because I adore green florals. I traded it off to a friend, and I think he's happy with it.

    Love that Talking Heads song! "This is not my beautiful wife!"

    I should be able to see it that way too. As you say, our charitable giving outstrips my expensive hobby by a long shot, but like you say, I know I don't NEED it. On the other hand, it enhances my life, reminds me to enjoy every day as an aesthetic end in itself, and spurs my imagination, helping me get my actual work done, so in a way, I DO need it.

    I have noticed that since I got really into perfume, I have pretty much stopped splurging on the kinds of stupid purchases that I used to justifiably feel guilty for--things like too-trendy clothes and unnecessary trifles.

    I am sorry about the Vent vert and you. I think it is one of the best, but each nose looks for different things to love.

    I think the Talking Heads were one of the best bands ever. and every line of this song is genius, spot on.

Many authors use pe rfume as a novelistic shorthand for memories awakened in complete recall. A character smells something and it awakens deep memories, or takes him back in time. In Daphne du Maurier’s neo-gothic romance Rebecca , this motif takes a sinister turn. A youung girl marries a widower with an obscure, tragic past and moves to his ancestral estate . She soon discovers that the place is haunted by the presence of the memory of the previous wife, Rebecca.  This ‘haunting’ is mostly expressed through smell and fragrance. A Perfume Riddle

I am introducing a new feature here on Hortus Conclusus , in which a perfume bottle sings a little riddle, and it’s up to you, dear readers, to guess which bottle of perfume is riddling. To start us out on the best possible foot, My first poem has an easy solution! Which of you will be the first to guess, I wonder: I’m not a pentangle.
